Trump Announces Commission on Religious Liberty, White House Faith Office

By Casey Harper | The Center Square

(Worthy News) – President Donald Trump addressed a gathering of the nation’s spiritual leaders and lawmakers at the National Prayer Breakfast Thursday, when he promised to create a religious liberty commission and end anti-Christian bias.

“I will be creating a brand-new presidential commission on religious liberty,” Trump told attendees at the Washington, D.C. event. “It’s going to be a very big deal.”

Trump also said he would sign an executive order directing Attorney General Pam Bondi to “eradicate anti-Christian bias.” Some Christians have raised concerns about unfair treatment uncovered in the Lois Lerner IRS scandal and the FBI’s recent treatment of Catholic groups as examples of the federal government’s bias against certain groups.

In another recent example, then-President Joe Biden’s Department of Justice prosecuted praying protesters who gathered at an abortion clinic. Trump pardoned those protesters as one of his first acts in office.

“From the earliest days of our Republic, faith in God has always been the source of the strength that beats in the hearts of our nation,” Trump said. “We have to bring religion back. We have to bring it back much stronger. It is one of the biggest problem that we’ve had over the last fairly long period of time.”

Trump also announced a White House Faith Office, to be led by Trump’s spiritual advisor, Paula White.

Trump told attendees he would be creating a new national park honoring America’s greatest heroes, saying that Rev. Billy Graham would be among the heroes recognized.

“When you don’t have it, you don’t see great nations,” Trump said. “Without God, we are isolated and alone, but with God, the Scripture tells us ‘all things are possible.’

“Well look at me,” Trump added. “I’m standing before you today. I shouldn’t be here … a shot that should not have missed.”

Speaking on the failed assassination attempt against him in Butler County, Pennsylvania last summer, Trump said “It was God who saved me,” a comment that drew a standing ovation.

“As the Bible says, blessed are the peacemakers,” Trump said. “…in the end, I hope my greatest legacy when it is all finished will be as a peacemaker and a unifier. I hope that’s going to be true.”
